Hello everyone. Today I’m going to talk about what these (line and shape) terms mean to fashion designers. According to fashion terminology, we study two different meanings of line and shape.
The first meanings of both these terms are familiar to ordinary people. A line is a ray extending in both directions and a shape is the enclosed space formed by the line. However, the most correct meaning of line for fashion professionals is that it refers to the alignment of the structural lines of a garment with the natural lines of the body. This means that the side seams of the garment should be perpendicular to the floor. And shape is another name for silhouette. That is, the line of apparel, or the shape of the entire garment. You know that whenever designers talk about lines and shapes, they are referring to the alignment of the structural lines of the garment with the natural lines of the body and the overall shape of the garment.
For more clarity, here are two diagrams to illustrate the difference.
The first figure shows the “line configuration”. This illustration uses different types of lines as the clothing design. It also shows the alignment of the center back v point with the center back of the figure’s body.
The second figure shows the “composition of shapes”. This illustration uses different types of shapes as clothing designs. It also shows the overall shape of the apparel, i.e. the shape of the umbrella along with the asymmetrical flare layers.
