Fes

A red-coloured hat in the shape of a truncated cone or short cylinder with a tassel, usually made of felt. Popular in the Middle East and North Africa. According to various sources, this hat originally came from Byzantium or North Africa.

The name Fez itself comes from the city of the same name in Morocco where these hats are made. From 1826, The fez was introduced as a headdress for the uniforms of Ottoman officers and soldiers, replacing the turban.

Turkish fez were traditionally red in color, easily achieved with natural vegetable dyes, but along with them, black and white were also used. They wore tails made of yarn, but the yarn often got tangled, so a different occupation, the tail comber, was popular at the time.

In Egypt, the fashion for the fez hat continued until the 50s of the last century, and in Morocco, many men still enjoy wearing a fez that does not cover their heads completely.
