Bottega Veneta embraces understated elegance for Spring 2023
Bottega Veneta’s visual language focuses primarily on the unspoken. Minimalism serves as the backbone of the brand, a ethos further enhanced in his Spring 2023 show designed by Mathieu Blasey.
A consistent component of the entire collection is the emphasis on construction, whether it is artisanal or industrial. Considering “Bottega Veneta”, Venetian shop Speaking in Italian, the focus on Italian craftsmanship in this season’s collection certainly fits. Many of the looks feature creative takes on tweed, beading, fringe, and patterns similar to the texture of Punch His Needle His rugs, evoking a unique handcrafted quality. The Maison’s exclusive leather intrecciato bag also uses the traditional basket weaving technique.
Construction is also interpreted in a more industrial way, manifested in the precise tailoring of sculptural trench coats, wrinkle-free button-downs and boxy power suits.
But laid-back casualness also permeates the collection, as evidenced by an abundance of baggy jeans, flannels and sweaters that roll easily over the shoulder. The popular intrecciato leather bag takes on new forms such as portable clutches, roomy oversized bags and shoulder slings that accentuate its casual sensibility. The absence of a single Bottega logo throughout the collection is a tribute to the ‘less is more’ approach. Overall, amidst the chaos of Milan Fashion Week, simplicity and honesty are welcome propositions.

Another factor in the overall coolness of Bottega’s runway this season was a low-key cameo appearance by Kate Moss. Rather than touting his casting as a ’90s supermodel stunt (as many other runway shows are known for), Bottega started and ended the show with a runway legend. Didn’t choose. Instead, Moss appeared as his sixth in the model line-up, clad in baggy jeans and unbuttoned flannel for the ultimate laid-back look.
The show’s most maximalist element might have been the colorful sets and runways created by renowned Italian architect and design pioneer Gaetano Pesce. The multicolored flooring and colorful chairs exhibited a glazed ceramic-like finish and served as an evocative backdrop to the relatively subdued collection.
