The crew was invited to Windsor to meet the Princess of Wales for the first time since her appointment as sponsor of the HMS Glasgow ship was announced last June.

Last June, Prince William announced the Duchess of Cambridge as the ship’s royal sponsor when he visited the BAE Systems shipyards where the ship is being built.

Known north of the border as Earl of Strathairn, William visited the BAE Systems yard in Govan, Glasgow to meet the team building HMS Glasgow on the banks of the River Clyde.
He announced that the 39-year-old Duchess of Cambridge would sponsor a Royal Navy frigate and officially name it after the Queen approved her appointment to the role.
He announced: “Her Majesty has approved the appointment of my wife Katherine as the sponsor of the wonderful ship HMS Glasgow, which we are taking shape outside of.
“I think Katherine will be delighted to be able to attend the naming ceremony in Glasgow in the near future.”

HMS Glasgow is the first of a new City Class Type 26 frigate for the Royal Navy. The first batch of new generation ships, on the River Clyde she is being built by BAE Systems, followed by HMS Cardiff and her HMS Belfast in the first class.
The ship’s primary role is anti-submarine warfare and air defense, but its flexible design allows it to perform other missions such as counter-terrorism missions, disaster relief and coast guard missions. These ships also provide important protection for the Continuous Maritime Deterrence Force (CASD) and the Royal Navy’s carrier strike groups.
