10 summer fashion trends and must-haves
S.
Summer in the city! Here are some must-haves to get you through this scorching heat. From swinging vintage florals to belting his bag dressing up, this season’s trends combine sweet nostalgia with a modern twist.
No matter how hot or humid it is, I feel very happy to feel the warmth and sunshine. Long warm nights, watching plays in the park (High Line), watching movies under the stars (Bryant Park film series), summer is all about energy and joy.
This is also reflected in your fashion sense. Beautiful florals, vibrant colors, revivals of old trends and reinterpretations of archaeological treasures, this season’s trends combine sweet nostalgia with a modern twist. We’ve rounded up our top 10 favorite summer fashion trends and styles. The first 5 are listed here and the last 5 are in the video.
1. Vintage Floral
As the infamous Miranda Priestley once said, spring-summer florals aren’t exactly revolutionary, but this season’s trend looks more like a refresh than a rerun. Vintage-inspired flowers incorporate wallpaper patterns, subtle prints, and playful tones. I especially like her vintage floral dresses with heels. On days when you walk a lot, you want to match it with sneakers. Floral mini dress + casual sneakers = chic city look! Below are some of my favorites. Team it with nude heels, gladiator sandals, or casual sneakers.
2. Belt bag
A recent fashion/style accessory trend that has undergone a massive resurgence with strong expressions of ‘love’ and ‘hate’ from everyone was the belt bag. It’s strange to imagine a “fanny pack” being considered her fashion accessory, but it’s clear that it was a favorite on the runways from Prada to Gucci. I have to admit that it took me a while to get on board with this trend. For one thing, I wasn’t sure whether to call it a fanny pack, belt bag, or arm rest (as you can see here). But fashion is all about getting out of your comfort zone, so I gave it a try. Like and not in love. But I love diversity. Wrap it around your waist, pass it through a belt loop, hang it over your shoulder, or remove the belt for a clutch style.
3. Straight jeans
While skinny jeans are a wardrobe staple and a timeless silhouette that’s perfect for any occasion, another denim style is catching the fashion industry’s attention. Trendy straight leg jeans are a relaxed denim style with a retro feel. I think it’s an elegant version of boyfriend jeans. I like the look of high-waisted straight jeans as opposed to low-waisted boyfriend jeans. Plus, I like them trimmed. A perfect way to stretch your frame and highlight your favorite shoes.
4. Bright shoes
oh so beautiful! Vibrant hues carry over, from sunny yellows to her ’80s-inspired teals and fuchsias. This summer’s footwear is all about bold color pops. Whether you want to add a bright accent to your everyday casual look or add eye-catching detail to a dressier look, colored shoes are easy to style for any occasion. Darling lilac purple, bold fiery red, happy sunshine yellow… Pair with straight jeans (pictured) for a weekend look, or pair with a little black dress for a night out!
5. Coin necklace
Digging into our past, this summer season is all about reinterpreting archaeological treasures. Reimagined antique gold coins and medallions, styled with delicate long chains and layered in varying lengths and shapes.
Worn alone or layered, coin necklaces exude an ancient feel that still feels today. Striking, mysterious and edgy all in one. A coin necklace can also serve as a base for layering. I love to start high with thin chokers or chain chokers and work my way up with coin necklaces of various lengths and sizes. This jeweled look looks beautiful when paired with his low-cut t-shirts and shirts and dresses with deep necklines.
